Overpowering Momentum

Character weight or slippery surfaces can create a need for the player to overcome momentum and correct their course. The struggling fight against and slow overtaking of an opposite force creates a rewarding feeling and can be quite interesting visually.

It's reminiscent of an old cartoon character spinning their legs in place before take off. The antipation! The build up! The take off! What delightful movement!

The need to overpower momentum can create tense situations! It can be the difference between crashing into a wall and clearing a turn!

In Hydro Thunder, the weight of the boats and low-friction surface of the water means the player must fight against the momentum of their water craft.
