Player moves may have a max speed during standard use, but other special moves or environmental factors can raise these limits. How delightful!
Imagine a game with a jump that can move the player forward at 10 units/second and a dash that can move the player forward at 15 units/second but only last 1 second. Reward the player with a 15 units/second jump that lasts the length of the jump by letting them jump out of a dash and not resetting the forward speed until the player hits the ground.
In Sonic 2, hitting a speed booster will send you straight past your normal speed cap.
